“Intern Engineering” is a new approach developed for engineering students who have completed their coursework and spend their final semester (approximately four uninterrupted months) in industry as prospective graduates. Intern engineering is not an “internship.” It goes far beyond traditional internship practices; it involves taking on responsibilities and participating in activities in industry as an engineer. “Intern Engineers” work in industry just like professional engineers. By combining the theoretical and practical education they received at university with direct industrial applications, they are trained to enter the industry fully prepared as engineers. After completing all their courses, intern engineers spend one of their final semesters entirely in industry, following working hours and shift schedules, and actively working in production environments—that is, directly in the field.
Intern Engineering is a unique project within the country. One of the biggest challenges faced by industrial cities in Anatolia is the shortage of qualified human resources. Graduating engineers generally prefer to start their careers in institutions located in western regions. As a result, there is a significant shortage of technical personnel in Anatolia. Through the intern engineering practice, both the employment of engineers in new organizations and the establishment of long-term employment agreements between companies and intern engineers have become possible. This represents a significant contribution to employment in Turkey. It is an important step both in creating job opportunities for new graduates and in addressing the workforce shortage in industry.
IMPORTANCE OF INTERN ENGINEERING FOR STUDENTS;
Intern engineers gain practical experience by applying the theoretical knowledge they have acquired. In this way, students have the opportunity to closely familiarize themselves with the industry and companies. In addition, intern engineers gain an advantage by obtaining references from the companies they work with, and they begin their professional careers with high self-confidence and sufficient qualifications as a result of this experience.
IMPORTANCE OF INTERN ENGINEERING FOR THE FACULTY OF ENGINEERING;
With the intern engineering practice, which differs significantly from traditional internships, coordination between faculties and companies is strengthened, and the added value provided by graduates to companies and society increases. It is anticipated that this project will make a significant contribution to addressing the shortage of qualified intermediate staff in our country.
