The Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program curriculum is designed in alignment with the program educational objectives and program outcomes, ensuring that students acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies required for professional engineering practice. The curriculum adopts an integrated and balanced structure consisting of basic sciences, engineering sciences, discipline-specific courses, general education, and design-oriented components.
Mathematics and Basic Sciences
The program provides a strong theoretical foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and probability/statistics. These courses equip students with the fundamental principles required for modeling, analyzing, and solving engineering problems.
Basic science courses are supported by laboratory experiments and practical applications, enabling students to translate theoretical knowledge into engineering practice.
The curriculum includes core civil engineering courses such as engineering mechanics, statics, strength of materials, structural analysis, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics and water resources, transportation engineering, construction materials, and construction management.
Engineering Fundamentals and Discipline - Specific Courses
These courses are supported by theoretical instruction, laboratory work, computational tools (e.g., finite element methods), and project-based learning. The objective is to develop students’ ability to:
- Apply engineering principles to complex problems
- Perform analytical and critical thinking
- Design engineering systems and components
- Evaluate multidisciplinary engineering systems
General Education
The curriculum incorporates general education courses that enhance students’ understanding of the social, ethical, and professional dimensions of engineering practice. These courses aim to develop:
- Awareness of professional and ethical responsibilities
- Ability to function effectively in teams
- Effective written and oral communication skills
- Awareness of societal, environmental, and sustainability issues
Foreign Language Education
The program includes foreign language courses that enable students to follow technical literature and communicate effectively in international engineering environments, supporting lifelong learning and professional development.
Design and Practical Experience
Students gain comprehensive engineering design experience through laboratory courses, project-based learning, mandatory internships, and a capstone (graduation) project.
Within the capstone design project, students are required to:
- Identify and formulate real-world engineering problems
- Apply relevant engineering standards (e.g., Eurocode, ACI, TS)
- Develop solutions considering realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, and sustainability factors
This process ensures that students attain professional competence prior to graduation.
Continuous Improvement
The curriculum is regularly reviewed and improved based on course assessment results, program outcome evaluations, and feedback from internal and external stakeholders. This continuous improvement process ensures the program’s relevance, effectiveness, and alignment with current engineering practices.
The curriculum is designed to satisfy MÜDEK accreditation criteria as follows:
a. Mathematics and Basic Sciences:
The curriculum includes at least 32 local credits of mathematics and basic science courses, tailored to civil engineering applications and supported by experimental studies.
b. Engineering and Professional Education:
The program includes more than 90 ECTS credits of engineering science and civil engineering design courses covering major sub-disciplines such as structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, and transportation engineering.
c. General Education:
The curriculum integrates general education components that complement the technical content and address ethical, social, and communication aspects of engineering.
d. Foreign Language Requirement:
The program is delivered in Turkish and includes at least 9 local credits of English language courses at the introductory level.
