Art and Memory Meet at Toros University: "Traces of Architectural Memory" Exhibition Opens

The Toros University Gülüm Özveren Art Gallery is hosting the solo ceramic exhibition titled "Traces of Architectural Memory" by artist Serkan Günenç. Opening its doors on April 1st, the exhibition brings together architectural forms and ceramic art through an interdisciplinary lens.

The event commenced with an opening speech by Prof. Dr. Uğurcan Akyüz, Dean of the Toros University Faculty of Fine Arts, Design, and Architecture (GSTMF), who emphasized the impact of art on collective memory. Attended by academics, students, and numerous art enthusiasts, the opening highlighted the relationship between space, memory, and material in Serkan Günenç’s creative practice.

A New Interpretation of Architectural Forms in Ceramics

The works in the exhibition carry cultural codes of the past into the present with a contemporary aesthetic by reinterpreting architectural forms and spatial traces on ceramic surfaces. Günenç—who completed his education at Dokuz Eylül University and continues his academic work at the Mersin University Faculty of Fine Arts, Ceramics Department—treats ceramics not merely as a formal tool of expression, but as a conceptual ground where cultural and architectural memory is materialized.

"Silent Witnessing Transforms into a Space of Memory"

Touching upon the theoretical framework of the exhibition during his opening speech, Prof. Dr. Uğurcan Akyüz stated:

"Günenç’s ceramics transform the silent witnessing of architecture into spaces of memory; they invite the viewer to re-read the traces of the past with the sensitivity of today. these works demonstrate how the art of ceramics can be reproduced through contemporary discourse."
