Toros University Joins the EU COST Action CA24131

Prof. Dr. Zehra Yeğingil, a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at Toros University, has been accepted to participate in the COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) Action CA24131 (European Network for radiation-detection based Research and Innovation addressing increasing societal CHallenges – ENRICH), within the following three Working Groups:

  • WG2: Technological Advancement

  • WG5: Multidisciplinary and Societal Applications

  • WG7: Mentoring, Training and Dissemination

COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology), one of the European Union–related programmes and a funding organisation for European research and innovation networks, aims to help connect research initiatives across Europe and beyond and to enable researchers and innovators to develop their ideas in any field of science and technology by sharing them with peers. COST provides the necessary organisation and funding for this purpose. COST Actions are bottom-up networks with a four-year duration that support research, innovation, and careers.

Action joined: CA24131 – European Network for radiation-detection based Research and Innovation addressing increasing societal CHallenges (ENRICH)

  • EU approval date: 19/05/2025

  • Start date: 16/10/2025

  • End date: 15/10/2029

ENRICH ACTION SUMMARY

The main aim and objective of the COST Action in which Toros University has been accepted as a participant (ENRICH – European Network for radiation-detection based Research and Innovation addressing increasing societal CHallenges) is to establish a European network of researchers and stakeholders working on radiation-detection-based experiments and applications, strengthen links among different sub-communities of radiation detection physics, and build a cross-border, integrated community where interdisciplinary know-how, information exchange, and new ideas and challenges are discussed.

Many researchers work on photon detection on a daily basis and apply it in astrophysics, nuclear and atomic physics, materials science, data analysis, simulations, detectors, electronics, optics, medicine, cultural heritage, food safety, fraud detection, and other fields. However, the community remains fragmented, and sub-communities (e.g., nuclear physics, synchrotron users) often work separately. This lack of interdisciplinary collaboration limits the exchange of knowledge and the transfer of technologies from large-scale facilities to smaller laboratories and industries.

By bringing these different communities together, the ENRICH COST Action aims to enable cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary collaboration to accelerate scientific and technological advances in radiation detection.

Such collaboration will, first and foremost, focus on urgent scientific questions related to radiation detection in research areas such as fundamental physics, nuclear and astrophysics, data analysis, and X- and gamma-ray spectroscopy or imaging.

In addition, the scientific outcomes of ENRICH activities will contribute to addressing Europe’s major societal and technological challenges—such as energy autonomy, food safety, faster medical diagnostics, and more—thereby enhancing Europe’s industrial competitiveness. These challenges, in fact, require advances in analytical sciences, and radiation-based technologies play an important role across various sectors of science and society.

ENRICH will be founded on the principle of inclusiveness, and special attention will be given to early-career researchers and participants from ITC countries, including Türkiye, through mentoring programmes, proposal-writing trainings, and dedicated initiatives.
